The Mararit are one of several ethnic groups collectively referred to by the term Tama. They likely live along the Chad/Sudan border, and their language (Mararit) is a dialect of the Tama language.

Due to an economy devastated by corruption and prolonged civil war, Chad is the fifth poorest country in the world, with 80% of the population living in poverty. The Mararit are no exception, living as settled shepherds and small-scale gardeners of millet, sorghum, okra, and other vegetables.

The Mararit people are Muslim, though many intersperse elements of animism and witchcraft into Islam. In Chad, many Muslims practice Sufism, a mystical form of Islam, though a small minority practice more fundamental forms of Islam, such as Wahhabism or Salafism.
